Mark Hackett

Speaker Bio

Mark joined the NHS in 1984 through the NHS graduate management training scheme working in Central Birmingham. He held a number of general management positions in London, Neath and Port Talbot and North Birmingham before becoming the CEO at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital in 1995.

He subsequently undertook CEO roles in Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (1999-2004), University Hospitals Southampton (2004-2013) and University Hospital North Midlands (2013- 2016). After a period of consultancy working in the NHS and the private’s sector, he returned to the NHS leading the large integrated health board in Swansea Bay (2021 -2023) retiring from full time NHS CEO roles.

Mark is a recognised NHS leader and has contributed to the service, educational and research domains of the NHS retaining an interest in his career in these areas. H led the 2011 “Hackett Report – The vision of Homecare Medicines “and has recently contributed as chair to the NCHA steering group report on the same topic. He has led or participated in numerous regional and national reviews in his career and published on leadership, strategy, governance and culture. Mark is a fellow of University of Southampton and an Honorary Professor of Swansea University.
